Gold Purity

Gold Purity, What does Gold Karat mean?

When it comes to jewellery, the purity of the gold is one of the most important factors in determining its value. But how do you know if a piece of jewellery is made of genuine gold, or if it’s only plated? Knowing the karat of your gold can be the difference between a good deal and a bad one. Read on to learn how to measure Gold Purity and what is Gold Karat meaning?

Gold purity is determined by its Karat rating, which measures the gold content in parts per 24. Put simply, the higher the karat rating, the more original gold and less alloy is in the piece. Pure gold is 24 karats, but most jewellery contains a lower karat rating and is mixed with other metals for strength and durability. This alloy, or combination of metals, is what gives gold jewellery its durability and strength as well as its unique look and colour.

Gold with a lower karat rating than 24 is mixed with alloy metals like silver, Nikkel, Zinc and copper to make it more durable and create different color shades . Knowing the karat of your gold jewellery can help you understand how much alloy metal has been mixed into the gold and determine its true value, when determining its worth – higher-karat gold is more valuable and rarer than lower-karat gold

For instance, 18K gold is made of 75% real gold and 25% alloy while 14K gold contains around 58.3% pure gold. When selecting jewellery, you want to make sure it’s high-karat and of good quality so that it maintains its strength and value over time.
